Helping you find your way…

Why Therapy?

Therapy is all about change. Oftentimes we sincerely want to change things about our thoughts and behaviors, but find ourselves unable to do so. This paradox of wanting to change while feeling stuck can make us frustrated, angry, hopeless or confused, among other things. But these types of circumstances are exactly what good therapy can help alleviate. We can learn to let go of old patterns of thinking and feeling that don’t serve us well and move forward, creating a new story for our own life. What a powerful opportunity!

Thinking of going to therapy can be quite intimidating for most of us. Effective therapy involves exploring and talking about areas of our life which may make us feel uncomfortable. Many of the issues people bring to therapy are persistent, I believe, because the person has not been able to find a way to open up to someone at a deeper level. For this reason, in order to get any real insight and lasting change from therapy, we really need to find a skilled therapist we trust. The quality and trust of this relationship between the therapist and the client is the core foundation of good therapy.

Please know that I have experienced my own struggles with life too. I spent years in denial and resistance regarding my own issues before I finally became willing to work on myself. I realized that if I were to really recover my life and change my path, I would need to address those things about myself that I didn’t really want to admit or talk about. I didn’t want to face the regret, shame, rage, fear. guilt, loneliness and other difficult emotions that I was constantly trying to run and hide from. But when I really committed myself to my own recovery, including professional psychotherapy, I found that I was able to reinvent and truly repair and change my life.

It has been said, “It’s the journey, not the destination, that matters”, which I really relate to. This journey of ongoing self-examination has helped me to realize that we all have a fantastic opportunity to really live this life, to reinvent ourselves, to create a new story. I am so grateful that this experience has truly inspired me help others along their path too. I look forward to helping you.

With Gratitude,

John

How Can I Help?

Addiction and Recovery

I help people explore concerns they have  with   alcohol, drugs, prescription meds, food, social media, video games, sex.  Therapy  also supports people already in  recovery to help them address psychological and emotional issues that 12 step work is often not enough for.

Major Life Transitions

We can work through and find relief for situations such as relationship break-ups, career changes, “mid life crisis”, caregiving challenges, health and aging issues, or other major life transitions which are challenging and stressful.

Trauma

Past or recent trauma or PTSD can cause severe emotional disturbances as well as unconscious compulsive behaviors and relationship problems. John is trained in EMDR and other therapy modalities specific for treating trauma issues.

End of Life Issues

Therapy can support you in coping with a serious illness, adjusting to a terminal diagnosis, or help family members through the grief process.  I have had the privilege of years of  experience counseling  hospice patients  and their families.
